1. Public Record
7 November 1974, Belgravia. Sandra Rivett, the nanny, is beaten to death in the basement of 46 Lower Belgrave Street. Veronica, Countess of Lucan, is assaulted and escapes to a nearby pub, the Plumbers Arms. Lord Lucan, John Bingham, seventh Earl, is named that night. He appears later at the house of friends, Ian and Susan Maxwell-Scott, in Uckfield, leaves a letter, borrows a car, and is gone. A Ford Corsair is found at Newhaven on the 8th. Blood in it. An inquest in June 1975 names him as Rivett's killer. He is not in a dock.
Sightings run for decades: Australia, Africa, a hippie van, a monastery, a lost memory in India. They thin. In 1999 the Met says it thinks he died soon after Newhaven, probably by his own hand, and that the sightings are noise. A 2024 High Court order allows him to be presumed dead for probate. That is paperwork. It is not a grave. Rivett is the woman the file should open with and often does not.
A nanny. A borrowed car. A port. No passenger list that holds him.
2. Date of Incident
Night of 7 November 1974. Car 8 November. Inquest June 1975. Presumption of death much later.
3. Location
46 Lower Belgrave Street, then Uckfield, then Newhaven. Approximate 51°30 N 000°09 W at the house.
4. Official Narrative
Inquest: Lucan killed Rivett. Official narrative is a wanted man, then a presumed dead man. No body. The Met's 1999 view is suicide soon after the port, not a long exile.
5. Witness Layer
Veronica. The Plumbers Arms. The Maxwell-Scotts. Police. Later sighting industry.
6. Recovery Logistics
The Newhaven Corsair. Blood. No body in the Channel that was identified as his. No African farm that produced him for a court.
7. Assessment
A port file. Keep Rivett's name first. Keep Uckfield and the letter so the night has an after. Keep the 1999 Met sentence beside the decades of almost-him. Do not write Africa as a finished exile. Do not write the presumption as a finding of bones. The title ran. The nanny did not.
8. Materials & Remains
Car. Inquest. Later order. No grave this archive trusts.
9. Key Personnel
Sandra Rivett : The dead woman.
Veronica Lucan : The assaulted wife.
Lord Lucan : The missing man.
Ian and Susan Maxwell-Scott : Uckfield.
10. Aftermath
A face on a paper for a generation. A court that finally let the estate move. Rivett does not get him in a room.
11. Current Archive Status
Status: 7 Nov 1974. Newhaven car. Inquest names him. No body.
Confidence: High that Lucan fled that night and that the car was at Newhaven. High that Rivett was murdered in the house. Low that any later sighting is him. Low that the Channel holds a tagged recovery.
Filing note
A nanny in a basement, a wife on the stairs, a pub called the Plumbers Arms, a friend in Sussex, a letter, a Corsair at a port, decades of almost-him in other climates, a probate order that only meant the paper could move.
Sandra Rivett. The file should start with her and not with the title that ran.
