1. Public Record

20 January 1988, about 04:00. Eyre Highway, Nullarbor, roughly forty kilometres west of the Mundrabilla roadhouse. Faye Knowles and sons Patrick, 24, Sean, 21, Wayne, 18, two dogs, in a blue 1984 Ford Telstar GL, registration 7GD-560, heading east. Sean is driving. A bright light ahead. Sean asks if it is a spaceship. Patrick says no. Sean speeds up anyway.

At about twenty metres they describe a white blinding light, a slightly angular egg in a cup, yellow centre, a metre across, on or just above the road, moving back and forth. Sean swerves and almost meets a wagon towing a vanavan in the other lane. They later say the car is lifted, voices go slow and thick, a grey-black ash covers the cabin and the paint, four shallow dents sit at the corners of the roof, a tyre blows when the car comes down. They hide in low scrub for about half an hour, change the wheel, and drive to Mundrabilla. Roadhouse man Graham Henley says he saw a bright light in his rear-view. They push on to Ceduna. Sergeant Fred Longley finds four very frightened people at 04:45, a dented roof, ash-like material.

UFO Research groups inspect the Telstar after Channel 7 moves it from Wudinna. Four shallow roof marks, fist-like, one at each corner. Rear right tyre a blow-out, valve gone. Australian Mineral Development Laboratory reads clay and salt on the exterior, Nullarbor dust. Other analysts, including Richard Haines, say interior dust differs from exterior. Sceptics later call the black on the rims brake lining and the dents a roof-rack. The family do not walk the story back. The highway is the only road there is. There is no other way across.

A Ford. An egg on the bitumen. Two bags of dust that did not agree.

2. Date of Incident

20 January 1988, about 04:00 local. Mundrabilla within the hour. Ceduna police later that morning.

3. Location

Eyre Highway between Madura and Mundrabilla, Nullarbor. Approximate 31°50 S 128°00 E.

4. Official Narrative

Police take a report, the car, and the dust. Official narrative is an unexplained driving incident, not a recovery. No charge. No type certificate.

5. Witness Layer

Faye and the three sons. The oncoming van. Graham Henley at the roadhouse. Sergeant Longley at Ceduna. Channel 7. UFO Research SA and UFO Research Australia. Haines. AMDEL.

A soot was all over the car and there were four dents as though the car had been picked up by a magnet. I cannot explain it but all I know is that I saw four very terrified people at 4.45 on Wednesday morning.

6. Recovery Logistics

The Telstar. Four roof marks. A blown Dunlop. Two dust series that do not match each other. No object off the road.

7. Assessment

A road-and-dust file. Keep Sean's question and Patrick's no. Keep the near miss with the van so the hour has a second vehicle. Keep Henley's 04:45 and Longley's ash. Different dust is a laboratory sentence, not a passport. Do not write a lift as proved because the family felt one. Do not write the egg as typed. The Eyre Highway has no alternative route. That fact sits under every decision they made at 04:00.

8. Materials & Remains

Ford Telstar 7GD-560. Roof marks. Tyre. Dust bags. Police note. Lab letters.

9. Key Personnel

Sean Knowles : The driver who sped up.

Faye / Patrick / Wayne : The cabin.

Graham Henley : First outside eyes.

Fred Longley : Ceduna.

Richard Haines : Dust comparison.

10. Aftermath

Mundrabilla becomes an Australian road slide. The Telstar is inspected and released. The dust does not promote anyone's metal. A later 17 October light on the same stretch has no ash and no lift claim.

11. Current Archive Status

Status: 20 Jan 1988. Family car. Egg on the road. Dust differ. No object.

Confidence: High that the Knowles reported a close light on that stretch and arrived shaken at Mundrabilla and Ceduna with a marked roof. High that dust was sampled. Low that the interior dust is non-terrestrial. Low that the car left the road under a craft.

Filing note

Four in a cabin, two dogs, a son who asked the forbidden word, a brother who said no, twenty metres of white, a van they almost hit, grey ash, four shallow corners on a Ford roof, two kinds of dust in two bags.

Asked if it was a spaceship. Then he sped up anyway. That is the whole personality of the hour.
