ROANOKE
August 1590. White returns. CROATOAN on the post. No distress cross. No roll.
075°43'00 W
1. Public Record
Roanoke Island. John White's colony, 1587, including his granddaughter Virginia Dare, first English child recorded born in the present United States. White sails for supplies. War with Spain holds him. He returns in August 1590. The settlement is empty. Houses taken down in order, not burned in a raid. On a post, the word CROATOAN. On a tree, CRO. No cross of distress they had agreed. White wants to go on to Croatoan Island. Weather and a damaged ship send him off. He never stands in that village again.
Later English find Croatoan inhabited and some rumours of survivors inland. No roll-call. No bones that close a page. The word on the post is the whole surviving sentence. Everything after is a theory wearing that carving.
A delayed governor. A post. A weather that would not let him finish the walk.
CROATOAN
2. Date of Incident
Colony seated 1587. White's return August 1590. The empty years in between.
3. Location
Roanoke Island, present North Carolina. Approximate 35°56 N 075°43 W.
4. Official Narrative
There was no colonial inquest that survived. Official English narrative became lost colony. Croatoan as a destination is the only instruction they left him.
5. Witness Layer
John White. The sailors of 1590. Later colonists who heard stories. No living original settler who signed a second page.
6. Recovery Logistics
A carving. No graves White could read. Weather against a second landing.
7. Assessment
A post file. Keep 1590 and the orderly takedown. Keep the absent distress cross. Do not write a massacre because the houses were not standing. Do not write Croatoan as solved because the word is a place name as well as a mystery. White's weather is part of the failure, not an excuse written later.
8. Materials & Remains
White's account. The word. Later rumour. No roll.
9. Key Personnel
John White : The return.
Virginia Dare : The child in the missing roll.
The 1587 planters : The absent names.
10. Aftermath
America's first unfinished English sentence. Every later dig adds a maybe. The post is still the only line that is not a maybe.
11. Current Archive Status
Status: Return Aug 1590. CROATOAN on the post. No distress cross. No roll.
Confidence: High that White found the site cleared and the word carved. High that he did not reach Croatoan that voyage. Low that any single later theory owns the missing names.
Filing note
A grandfather held in England by a war, an August beach, houses taken down like a move, a word on a post, a tree with three letters, a storm that turned the ship, a man who never walked the next island.
No cross of distress. They had a sign for disaster. They did not use it. That is either hope or a hand that did not have time. The post does not say which.
