ALTON BARNES
12 July 1990. East Field, Alton Barnes, Wiltshire. Wheat pictogram large enough from Milk Hill and from a light aircraft. Same summer Bower and Chorley already say they made simpler marks with plank and rope.

1. Public Record
Alton Barnes, Wiltshire, 12 July 1990. A wheat field below Milk Hill wakes up with a pictogram large enough to see from the downs and from a camera in a light aircraft. East Field becomes a postcard. Crop-circle tourism finds its cathedral year. Doug Bower and Dave Chorley have already said, that same summer, that they have been making simpler marks with plank and rope since the late 1970s. The 1990 shapes do not wait for that sentence to finish.
Hoax, art, and visitors share the same tramlines. The farmer did not ask for a car park. The pictogram is real as flattened wheat. What made it is the fight that still pays for rooms in Devizes. Later makers sign work and still leave some nights unsigned. That mix is the Wiltshire trade.
A field. A shape that photographs well. Two men with a plank already talking.
Doug Bower and Dave Chorley have already said, that same summer, that they have been making simpler marks with plank and rope.
The plank does not automatically draw a cathedral. It puts human feet in the field as the default. That is the sentence this page will not retire. Art is allowed. A beam from a quiet sky has to work harder once two men have already spoken to newspapers.
2. Date of Incident
12 July 1990 for the famous Alton Barnes formation. Circlemaker admissions the same year. Simpler marks claimed from the late 1970s.
3. Location
East Field, Alton Barnes, Wiltshire. Approximate 51°21 N 001°51 W.
4. Official Narrative
No ministry type. Official-adjacent talk is hoax / art. Police interest is trespass, not physics.
5. Witness Layer
The farmer. Aerial photographers. Bower and Chorley. Later makers who signed work. Visitors who treated a working field as a church.
The pictogram is real as flattened wheat. What made it is the fight that still pays for B&Bs.
Photographs from a Cessna made the year. Harvest made the cost. The fight between those two sentences is still the Wiltshire season.
The farmer did not ask for a car park.
Trespass is the part the physics arguments skip. A man who owns wheat owns the flattening too. Tourism does not pay him first.
6. Recovery Logistics
Photographs. Flattened crop. No object in the tramlines. Later signed formations as context, not as proof of 12 July.
7. Assessment
Start with the plank. Two men said they did the simple ones. That does not automatically do a 1990 cathedral. It does put human feet in the field as the default. Art is allowed. Visitors landing in a crop they do not own is also allowed as a nuisance.
This folder files Alton Barnes as the postcard year of a Wiltshire trade. Keep Bower and Chorley in the same summer. Keep the farmer as the man who had to harvest around a car park. Do not write a beam from a quiet sky because the shape was pretty from a Cessna.
8. Materials & Remains
Aerial stills. Crop. Later signed formations as context.
9. Key Personnel
East Field farmer : The ground.
Bower and Chorley : The plank in the same summer.
10. Aftermath
Wiltshire keeps the season. Makers keep signing. The 1990 still keeps selling. Milk Hill still looks down on a field that learned to be a postcard.
11. Current Archive Status
Status: 12 Jul 1990. Pictogram. Plank already talking.
Confidence: High that a large formation appeared in East Field that morning. High that Bower and Chorley were already on the record. Low that a non-human author is required.
Filing note
A Wiltshire field in July, a shape that loved an aeroplane camera, two men with a plank already telling newspapers they had been out at night, a farmer who had not asked for a lay-by.
The wheat was flat. That is the only part every side still photographs.
