1. Public Record

1 July 1965, Thursday, about 05:45. Lieu-dit Olivol, two kilometres north-west of Valensole, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Maurice Masse, forty-one, lavender farmer, left home at 05:30 to bin his rows. At 05:40 he took off his jacket, sat against a pile of stones and lit a cigarette. A whistling came from the far side of the stones. He walked toward it and, at about 80 metres, saw an egg-shaped machine the size of a Renault Dauphine standing in the lavender on six thin legs and a central pedestal. Through a transparent dome, one small figure. On the ground, another. They were the size of an eight-year-old, grey-green one-piece, large hairless heads, pointed chins, small mouths. They appeared to be taking lavender.

He closed the distance. One figure turned and pointed a small tube. Masse stopped. He said later he could not move head, arms, legs or body, and that he felt nothing except the stop. He heard a gargling from their throats. He told the gendarmes they seemed to be mocking him. The figures went back through a sliding door. A dull sound. The machine rose, moved off, and was gone. Masse stood in the field for about a quarter of an hour before the paralysis lifted. That evening he brought his daughter back. The soil under the legs had gone hard, like cement. Lavender along the line of departure dried. That patch did not grow properly again for years.

He told a friend at 10:30 the same morning and kept the figures and the tube out of the first village version, afraid of being taken for a fool. The rumour reached Chef Oliva at the Valensole brigade. Masse was summoned on 2 July. He stated he had taken nothing to eat or drink before leaving home. Gendarmes walked the field that night about 22:00 and found a shallow basin 1.20 metres across, a cylindrical hole 18 centimetres by 40 at the centre, walls smooth as glass, and four shallow grooves in a cross. Captain Valnet from Digne came the next night. Masse returned in August to put the figures fully on the paper.

I wanted to move and I could not.

2. Date of Incident

1 July 1965, about 05:45. First village account that morning. Gendarmerie statement 2 July, field visit that night, photographs 3 July. Supplemental statement 18 August.

3. Location

Lavender field at Olivol, near Valensole, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Approximate 43°50 N 005°59 E.

4. Official Narrative

Gendarmerie: farmer, marks, no aircraft found. Regional daily summary of 2 July already used the phrase soucoupe volante and noted traces that could correspond to an actual landing. GEIPAN later kept Valensole among the well-documented French landings. Official narrative is a close encounter with traces.

5. Witness Layer

Masse alone for the figures. Family and neighbours for the marks and for the change in him that morning, including a sudden need to sleep. A boy on a road later said he had seen something rise. Keep Masse and the gendarmerie basin as the spine. The August supplement is the same man putting back what he had first left out.

They seemed to be mocking me.

Masse, on the gargling

6. Recovery Logistics

Gendarmerie photographs and measurements. Soil notes. Dried lavender along the departure line. No recovered craft.

7. Assessment

A French close-trace file with a farmer who went back to the same rows. The tube and the paralysis are the part later catalogues like. The hard soil, the 18-centimetre hole with glass-smooth walls, and the same-day statement are the part you can still argue from. Keep both. Do not upgrade the egg to a recovered vehicle. It left. Do not collapse the first cautious statement and the August supplement into one hour.

8. Materials & Remains

Procès-verbal of 2 July and the August addendum. Field photographs.

9. Key Personnel

Maurice Masse : The field.

Chef Oliva : Valensole brigade.

Capt. Valnet : Digne company, 3 July.

GEIPAN later desk : Kept the traces.

10. Aftermath

Valensole became a named landing. Masse stayed a farmer. The patch grew again, slowly. Sixty years on the plateau still tells the morning.

11. Current Archive Status

Status: Farmer, two figures, landing marks, Valensole, 1 July 1965.

Confidence: High that Masse made a statement within a day and that a basin and hole were recorded by gendarmes. Moderate that a second road witness belongs to the same minute. Low that a craft was taken from the field. Low that a helicopter sits on those six legs and a central pedestal.

Filing note

A farmer walking toward a whistle, an egg on legs, two small figures taking plants, a tube, a man who could not take the next step, soil like cement, a gendarmerie desk before the story had time to travel. The machine left. The rows did not.

He went back to work the same week. Not a lecture on entities. A man returning to the same plants with the landing still in the dirt.
