1. Public Record
19 January 1966, morning. A farm near Tully, north Queensland. George Pedley, a banana farmer, was driving a tractor toward a lagoon when he heard a hiss and saw a rising, spinning, saucer-shaped object leave the reeds and head southwest. Where it had been: a circular mat of reeds, thirty feet across, the stems swirled flat and still green, floating as if something heavy had sat and then gone.
He fetched neighbours. Photographs were taken the same day. More nests appeared on other lagoons in the weeks after. The RAAF looked and did not recover an object. Pedley kept farming. The first nest is the one the file is built on.
It rose out of the swamp with a hiss.
2. Date of Incident
19 January 1966, about 09:00. Photographs that morning. Later nests through the season.
3. Location
Horseshoe Lagoon, near Tully, Queensland. Approximate 17°56 S 145°55 E. Cane and swamp, wet season.
4. Official Narrative
RAAF and local police: unusual reed mat, no aircraft recovered. Official narrative is a farmer and a nest. Waterspout and rotors have been offered since.
5. Witness Layer
Pedley alone for the rise. Neighbours for the nest while it was still wet and green. Later nests had fewer rising-object witnesses. Keep those layers apart.
It was grey, dull, about twenty-five feet across.
6. Recovery Logistics
Photographs. Reed samples. The mat broke up as mats do.
7. Assessment
The Australian physical-trace file that crop-circle talk later tried to swallow. A tractor, a hiss, a nest still green. A waterspout can swirl reeds. It has to also be the thing Pedley said he watched leave. Keep the same-morning photographs. They are why the page is not only a later fashion.
8. Materials & Remains
1966 photographs. Police notes. No recovered craft.
9. Key Personnel
George Pedley : Tractor. The hiss.
Neighbouring farmers : The nest while green.
RAAF : Looked. Left empty-handed.
10. Aftermath
Tully became a sentence in nest catalogues. Pedley did not become a circuit speaker. The lagoon kept growing reeds.
11. Current Archive Status
Status: Farm nest with a rising-object witness, Tully, 19 January 1966. Photographs same morning.
Confidence: High that Pedley reported a rising object and that a swirled reed mat was photographed that day. Moderate that later nests belong to the same cause. Low that a craft was taken from the lagoon. Low that a waterspout has been proved for the first event.
Filing note
A banana farmer on a tractor, a hiss, a dull grey thing leaving the reeds, a thirty-foot mat still green when the neighbours arrived. Photographs before the story had time to travel. The RAAF went home.
The reeds were still green. Not a burnt ring. Living stems laid flat the same morning. That small botanical fact makes the hiss colder than any later nest that had no witness standing in the swamp.
