1. Public Record

16 January 1958, about 11:00. Brazilian Navy ship Almirante Saldanha anchored off Trindade Island, eight hundred miles from Espírito Santo. End of an oceanographic trip. Civilian divers aboard by invitation. People on the stern shout. Captain-aviator José Viegas among them. A silver plate-shape comes off the sea toward the island, no sound, sometimes fast, sometimes slow, a pale trail when it accelerates. Almiro Baraúna, forty-two, Rolleiflex, 1/125 at f/8, six frames. Four later show a Saturn-like form. Two miss. Film developed on the ship.

The Navy is adjacent and then reserved. A March 1958 US Naval Attaché report says commanding officers did not see it and calls a hoax or publicity stunt most likely. Blue Book opens a card. In 2011 a relative says Baraúna described a laboratory montage in private. Other analysts still argue the grain. About fifty people were said to be on deck. Not fifty statements sit in this cabinet.

A ship, an island, four frames, an attaché who did not like the week.

2. Date of Incident

16 January 1958, late morning. Attaché report 11 March 1958. Later laboratory allegations 2011.

3. Location

Trindade Island, South Atlantic. Approximate 20°31 S 029°19 W.

4. Official Narrative

Brazilian Navy hosted the civilians and then declined to treat the frames as proof. US attaché preferred hoax. Official narrative is reserved curiosity, not a recovery.

5. Witness Layer

Baraúna. Viegas. Amilar Vieira Filho. Other named divers. Deck crowd as a number. Attaché as the hostile reader. The 2011 relative.

Commanding officers did not see the object.

US Naval Attaché, March 1958

6. Recovery Logistics

Four printed frames. Shipboard development claim. No object taken from the island.

7. Assessment

A ship-and-island file. Keep 11:00 and the stern shout. Keep the attaché so the week is not only Brazilian pride. A relative's 2011 sentence is late and useful and not a trial. Do not write fifty witnesses as fifty affidavits. Do not write the Navy as a believer because the ship was there.

8. Materials & Remains

Four photographs. Attaché cable. Blue Book card. 2011 allegation.

9. Key Personnel

Almiro Baraúna : Rolleiflex.

José Viegas : The shout on the stern.

US Naval Attaché : March 1958.

10. Aftermath

The Saturn outline becomes a South Atlantic slide. The ship is scrap. The island is still an island. The montage claim did not put a lab receipt in the folder.

11. Current Archive Status

Status: 16 Jan 1958. Four frames. Navy reserved. Attaché hostile. Montage claim late.

Confidence: High that Baraúna was aboard and that four frames were published. Low that commanding officers saw what the civilians saw. Low that 2011 settles manufacture.

Filing note

An island eight hundred miles out, a ship packing to leave, a shout on the stern, a Rolleiflex at f/8, four Saturns and two misses, an attaché who chose hoax before he chose wonder, a relative speaking half a century later.

Developed aboard. That is the chain Baraúna offered. Either the darkroom was the sea, or the darkroom was later. The file still has no third room.
