1. Public Record

11 November 1979. TAE flight 002 is a Super Caravelle with people in it, not a story. Captain Javier Lerdo de Tejada is taking them toward the Canaries. Off the Spanish coast something holds position with the nose of the aircraft in a way traffic is not supposed to. Lights. More than one. Close enough that the cockpit stops being a routine. He asks for a landing at Manises, Valencia, because continuing feels like an argument he does not want to have with a cabin full of passengers.

On the ground the night does not end. Ground witnesses later talk about lights over the area. Spanish Air Force jets go up from Los Llanos. Whatever they were sent toward does not sit still to be collected. The airliner is already at the gate. That sequence is the file: a civilian captain refused the rest of the route.

1979 Spain is not a fringe magazine. An airline turning back is paperwork, fuel, and a lot of people who will ask why they are in Valencia. Captains do not spend that kind of money for a pretty light.

I was not going to take the passengers through that.

How Lerdo de Tejada's decision was later told

That is a safety sentence. It is also the only reason Manises gets a name on this shelf. He put the aircraft on a runway instead of on a theory.

2. Date of Incident

11 November 1979, night, airspace off eastern Spain, diversion to Manises / Valencia.

3. Location

In flight toward the Canaries, diversion to Valencia Airport (Manises). Approximate 39°29 N 000°28 W.

4. Official Narrative

Civil aviation and later Spanish military attention. No public recovery. Official-adjacent talk later offers planets, refuelling shapes, and misread traffic. The diversion order remains the part those closes have to explain to a cabin.

5. Witness Layer

Javier Lerdo de Tejada and cockpit. Cabin as later remembered. Ground observers around Valencia. Fast jets from Los Llanos.

It stayed with us. It was not passing traffic.

Cockpit talk as later carried

Passing traffic ends. This did not end soon enough for a man whose job is to know the difference. Ground lights after the landing are extra. They may be the same night or the night catching fire in other mouths. The cockpit is the hour that had to make a decision.

Passengers exist in this file even when they are not named. An aircraft is a room. Someone in that room had a plastic cup and a seatbelt and then a captain's voice that was no longer bored.

6. Recovery Logistics

Flight paperwork. Later military scramble talk. No object on a Spanish apron.

7. Assessment

Start with the turn. A captain who diverts a paid route has already spent his night. Planets do not usually force that spend. Other traffic can. Other traffic usually has a number and a plan. If this was a tanker or a joke, it was a joke that put an airliner on the wrong island of concrete. That is a lot of joke.

The jets going up after is either seriousness or theatre after the fact. The airliner was already down. Whatever the jets chased, they did not bring it back to set beside the Caravelle. The honest centre is still the man who would not keep flying.

8. Materials & Remains

Aviation paper. Press. No hardware from the nose.

9. Key Personnel

Javier Lerdo de Tejada : The turn.

TAE 002 cockpit and cabin : The room.

10. Aftermath

Spanish television eats the night. The airline keeps being an airline. Manises keeps being a place people land on purpose. The lights do not file a flight plan.

11. Current Archive Status

Status: Diverted. Apron empty.

Confidence: High that TAE 002 diverted to Manises on 11 November 1979 after cockpit reports of lights holding with the aircraft. Low that the lights are typed. The turn is the object.

Filing note

A Super Caravelle at night, a captain who still had a cabin behind him, lights that would not become traffic, a runway at Valencia that was not on the original card.

He spent the company's fuel rather than spend the passengers. That is a kind of belief you can measure in jet-A.
