1. Public Record

Night of 2-3 November 1957. Levelland, Texas, a farm town west of Lubbock. Pedro Saucedo and Joe Salaz were first. A blue flash, a truck engine dead, a long lit object passing over with thunder and heat. Officer A. J. Fowler on the night desk thought it was a joke. Then the phone kept ringing.

Jim Wheeler: egg-shaped, two hundred feet, sitting in the road. Other drivers: engines dead, lights out, engines live again when the thing left. Sheriff Weir Clem saw a red mass like a sunset across the highway. Fire Chief Ray Jones had his own vehicle sputter. Fowler logged about fifteen calls. Blue Book sent a man and wrote lightning. Clem did not sound like a man who had seen lightning.

I jumped out of the truck and hit the dirt because I was afraid. I called to Joe but he didn’t get out. The thing passed directly over my truck with a great sound and rush of wind. It sounded like thunder and my truck rocked from the flash. I felt a lot of heat.

Pedro Saucedo

2. Date of Incident

2 November 1957 into the small hours of the 3rd. Blue Book file opened at once. Sputnik was three weeks old. That fact sat in the air and does not by itself stall a line of trucks.

3. Location

Highways around Levelland, Hockley County, Texas. Approximate 33°35 N 102°22 W. Oklahoma Flat Road for several of the later calls. Flat South Plains, no hills to hide a story in.

4. Official Narrative

Project Blue Book: electrical storm, ball lightning or similar. Hynek was unhappy with the speed of that close. Official narrative is weather. The sheriff’s night is not weather on its face.

5. Witness Layer

Farm workers first, then truckers, a student, officers, the fire chief. Independent approaches to the same few miles of road. The repeated mechanical failure is the spine. Saucedo’s companion stayed in the cab. That is a useful split inside a single truck.

Looking like a brilliant red sunset across the highway.

Sheriff Weir Clem

Everybody who called was very excited.

Officer A. J. Fowler

6. Recovery Logistics

No object in a barn. Engines that died and lived. Blue Book paper. Clem’s statement.

7. Assessment

The American electromagnetic-effects case with the most drivers on the same night. Blue Book’s lightning is a closed sentence that does not cover why so many ignition systems recovered in the same way. Do not promote it to a landing with occupants. Do not reduce it to weather because the file is easier that way.

8. Materials & Remains

Police logs. Blue Book case file. No wreckage.

9. Key Personnel

Pedro Saucedo / Joe Salaz : First call.

Sheriff Weir Clem : Saw a red mass. Did not sound like lightning.

Officer A. J. Fowler : Night desk.

Fire Chief Ray Jones : Vehicle effects.

Project Blue Book : Weather.

10. Aftermath

Levelland did not become a tourist triangle. The file sat in Blue Book and in Hynek’s later unhappiness. Sputnik got the headlines that week. The stalled trucks did not.

11. Current Archive Status

Status: Multi-vehicle electromagnetic-effects night, 2-3 November 1957. Blue Book: weather. Local officers unconvinced.

Confidence: High that multiple drivers and at least two officials reported a bright object and engine failure on that night. High that engines recovered when the object left. Low that Blue Book’s lightning close is adequate. Low that a craft was recovered.

Filing note

Farm workers, truckers, a sheriff, a fire chief, engines that died and then lived, a Blue Book sentence about lightning written while Sputnik was still new. Fowler thought the first call was a joke. Then the phone kept ringing.

Joe Salaz stayed in the cab. One man in the dirt, one man who would not get out. That small split inside a single truck makes the thunder overhead colder than any later weather memo.
