1. Public Record
Sarah Lockwood Pardee Winchester. Infant daughter Annie dead. William Wirt Winchester dead of tuberculosis in 1881. The rifle fortune came west. In 1884 she bought an unfinished eight-room farmhouse in San Jose from Dr. Caldwell and named it Llanada Villa. Building ran until she died on 5 September 1922. No architect of record. Stairs into ceilings. Doors onto air. The house now lists about 160 rooms, 10,000 windows, 2,000 doors, 47 stairways. Tour narrative later added a Boston medium and a command to build without cease for the dead of the Winchester gun. That sitting is thinner in contemporary paper than the house itself.
What is thick is payroll. Men on shifts. A widow who kept adding rooms. The 1906 quake took the top storeys. She built around the damage. Construction stopped the morning she did. The house opened to the public in 1923. Staff later added footsteps and voices. File those as a second layer.
If she wished to live, she must appease them by moving out west and constantly, without ceasing, build.
2. Date of Incident
Purchase 1884. Death and halt 5 September 1922. Public 1923.
3. Location
525 South Winchester Boulevard, San Jose. Approximate 37°19 N 121°57 W.
4. Official Narrative
A private house, then a tourist house. Official narrative is architecture and a widow. The séance command is folklore on the ticket.
5. Witness Layer
Sarah. The crews. Later guides. No signed medium transcript in the first paper.
Construction seemingly never ceased.
6. Recovery Logistics
The house itself. Inventories after her death. No spirit captured in a room.
7. Assessment
A house-as-phenomenon file. Keep the deaths in New Haven. Keep the 38 years of wages. The medium is the story the tour needs. The stairs into blank walls are the thing you can still walk. Do not diagnose Sarah from a gift shop. Do not pretend a rifle fortune cannot buy a maze for quieter reasons.
8. Materials & Remains
The mansion. Period photographs. Payroll traces. No séance minutes from 1884.
9. Key Personnel
Sarah Winchester : The build.
William Wirt Winchester : The fortune that paid it.
The crews : Night and day, as later told.
10. Aftermath
A landmark. A tour. A 2018 film that is not a document. The stairs still go nowhere.
11. Current Archive Status
Status: San Jose house, 1884-1922. Continuous build. Medium story later. House stands.
Confidence: High that Sarah built without a single finished plan until 1922. High that the odd stairs exist. Low that a documented sitting ordered the work. Low that the dead of the rifle have been shown in the rooms.
Filing note
Two graves in the east, an unfinished farmhouse, thirty-eight years of men on wages, a quake, stairs that stop in plaster, a death in 1922 that stopped the hammers. The ticket later added a medium.
The work ended the morning she did. Not a séance. A payroll that had only ever had one signature.
