1. Public Record

Pangboche monastery, Khumbu, Nepal. A mummified hand kept with a scalp, wired phalanges, dark skin, oil from the lamps. Tom Slick heard of it on his 1957 trek. In 1958-59 Peter Byrne, on Slick's money, saw it and was told it could not leave. He took finger bone. The later versions disagree on whether money changed hands. William Osman Hill in London looked at the piece and leaned human, with a mutter about Neanderthal traits that did not survive later tests. Jimmy Stewart's name sits in the smuggling layer. In 1991 Unsolved Mysteries put the monastery on television. Shortly after, the remaining hand and the scalp were stolen from the gompa. Income from pilgrims dropped.

A sliver from the Hunterian piece was sequenced in Edinburgh in 2011. Rob Ogden: a very strong match to human reference sequences. Human was what we were expecting and human is what we got. Mike Allsop had Weta cut a replica and took it back to the monks in 2011. The stolen original did not return.

It looked like a large human hand. It was covered with crusted black, broken skin.

2. Date of Incident

Byrne sample 1958-59. Theft of the remainder after 1991. DNA 2011. Replica 2011.

3. Location

Pangboche, Nepal. Approximate 27°51 N 086°48 E.

4. Official Narrative

No state owns this relic. Official scientific narrative after 2011 is human bone. The monastery narrative is a stolen holy object.

5. Witness Layer

Byrne. Slick. Osman Hill. Ogden. Allsop as the man who brought a copy back.

Human was what we were expecting and human is what we got.

Rob Ogden, 2011

It would bring bad luck, disaster to the temple if it was taken away.

The monks, as Byrne told it

6. Recovery Logistics

A finger in London. A replica in 2011. The 1991 theft is still open.

7. Assessment

A relic file, not a sighting file. Keep the 2011 sequence. Keep the theft that followed television. A human finger does not empty every print on the Khumbu. It does close this particular hand as a Yeti specimen. Do not let Stewart's suitcase become the whole story.

8. Materials & Remains

Hunterian sliver. 2011 sequence. Weta replica. No recovered 1991 hand.

9. Key Personnel

Peter Byrne : The sample.

Tom Slick : The cheque.

Rob Ogden : The 2011 match.

Mike Allsop : The copy that went home.

10. Aftermath

The gompa has a replica. The original drawer is empty. Yeti hunting moved on to hair and prints.

11. Current Archive Status

Status: Monastery hand. Sample taken 1959. DNA human, 2011. Remainder stolen.

Confidence: High that a wired hand sat at Pangboche. High that the tested sliver is human. High that the rest left the gompa after 1991. Low that this object was a Yeti.

Filing note

A lamp-oiled hand in a gompa, a man who would not take no, a London box, a television crew, an empty shrine, a sequence that said human, a replica flown back because the real one never was.

Human is what we got. Not a debate stage. A lab sentence after fifty years of a wired palm.
