KELLY-HOPKINSVILLE

Night of 21-22 August 1955. Multiple members of the Sutton family and guests at a farmhouse near Kelly, Kentucky, reported a prolonged close-range encounter with small, glowing, humanoid entities. The family fired on the figures for several hours before fleeing to the Hopkinsville police. One of the best-documented multi-witness entity cases of the 1950s.

1. Public Record

On the night of 21 August 1955 a group of eleven people at a small farmhouse near Kelly, Kentucky, roughly seven miles north of Hopkinsville, reported being approached and harassed for several hours by small humanoid figures. The group included the Sutton family and visiting friends. After repeated attempts to drive the entities away with rifle and shotgun fire, the entire household fled in two cars to the Hopkinsville police station around 11 p.m., visibly terrified.

Police, state troopers, and military police from nearby Fort Campbell returned to the property with the family. A search of the house and grounds found spent shell casings, damaged screens, and little else. No bodies or clear physical remains of the reported entities were recovered. The story received immediate local and then national press coverage. Early accounts did not describe the figures as green; that detail entered later retellings.

The case remains one of the most persistent multi-witness close-range entity reports of the mid-20th century.

2. Date of Incident

The sequence began around 7 p.m. on Sunday 21 August 1955 when a bright object was seen descending near the property. The first entity was observed roughly an hour later. Activity continued intermittently until approximately 11 p.m., when the family left for the police. Some accounts indicate further sightings after they returned in the early hours of 22 August.

3. Location

Rural farmhouse in the community of Kelly, Christian County, Kentucky, approximately seven miles north of Hopkinsville. Approximate coordinates 36°54 N 87°28 W. The house sat on modest farmland with a well in the backyard and a gully or low area nearby where the initial luminous object was said to have come down.

4. Official Narrative

Hopkinsville police treated the report as serious enough to respond in force that night, accompanied by state officers and military police. They found a frightened family, evidence of heavy gunfire inside and around the house, and no entities. No arrests were made and no conventional explanation (hoax, animals, or intoxication) was formally adopted in the contemporary record. The case was left unresolved. Later investigators, including Isabel Davis for what became a detailed CUFOS study, interviewed surviving witnesses and found their core descriptions consistent.

5. Witness Layer

Eleven people were present: Glennie Lankford (matriarch), her sons Elmer “Lucky” Sutton and J.C. Sutton with their wives, younger children, O.P. Baker, and visiting friends Billy Ray Taylor and June Taylor. Not every person claimed a clear view of the entities, but multiple adults described the same basic figure.

Billy Ray Taylor was the first to report a bright, multicoloured object crossing the sky and descending into a gully near the property. Later that evening the family dog began barking. Lucky Sutton and Billy Ray went outside and saw a glowing figure approaching.

“It looked like a five-gallon gasoline can with a head on top and small legs. It was a shimmering bright metal like on my refrigerator.”

Glennie Lankford · describing one of the figures

The entities were generally described as three to four feet tall, with oversized round heads, large yellowish glowing eyes, long arms that reached nearly to the ground, and hands ending in talons or claws. The bodies appeared silvery or metallic and seemed to glow. Movement was often described as floating or as an odd, stiff-legged gait. When shot, the figures were said to flip backward or appear momentarily affected, then continue or reappear. One account describes a clawed hand reaching down and grasping at a man’s hair from the roof or a high window.

Police chief Russell Greenwell later noted that these were not people who normally ran to the authorities. “What they do is reach for their guns.” Yet they arrived at the station in genuine fear.

6. The Engagement

For roughly three to four hours the household traded shots with the figures. Faces appeared at windows. Figures were seen on the roof and in nearby trees. The men fired .22 rifles and shotguns; spent casings were later found in quantity. The entities did not appear to advance aggressively into the house, but they also did not stay away. After a lull the family decided the situation was untenable, loaded into two vehicles, and drove at speed to Hopkinsville.

When officers returned with them, the property was quiet. A luminous patch of grass was reported at one location where a figure had been shot, but no sample of lasting value appears to have been preserved.

7. Assessment

I treat Kelly-Hopkinsville as a high-value multi-witness entity case. Multiple adults in the same location described the same class of figure over several hours, under conditions of clear threat response (sustained defensive gunfire). The family did not seek publicity; they sought police help while still frightened.

Something small, bipedal or near-bipedal, luminous or reflective, and difficult to stop with conventional small arms was present around the farmhouse that night. The initial luminous object report remains secondary but consistent with a landing or arrival. No bodies were left. No clear tracks of conventional animals match the full description. The consistency of the independent witness drawings and statements collected soon after the event remains the strongest element of the file.

The later “little green men” label is mostly media distortion. Contemporary descriptions leaned metallic, silvery, or glowing rather than green.

8. Materials & Physical Indicators

Spent shell casings, damaged window screens, and at least one reported luminous patch of grass. No recovered biological material, no clear footprints of lasting quality, and no craft debris. The primary evidence remains the multi-person testimony and the immediate police response records.

9. Key Personnel

Glennie Lankford - Matriarch of the household; provided one of the clearer early descriptions.

Elmer “Lucky” Sutton - Primary shooter and adult male witness.

Billy Ray Taylor - First to report the descending object; present for the initial entity sighting.

J.C. Sutton, Vera Sutton, Alene Sutton, O.P. Baker - Additional adult witnesses inside the house.

Chief Russell Greenwell - Hopkinsville police chief who responded and later commented on the family’s genuine fear.

Isabel Davis - Later investigator whose detailed study remains one of the better source documents on the case.

10. Aftermath

The story spread quickly through local and national press, often with added colour and exaggeration. The family faced ridicule and unwanted attention. Some members became reluctant to discuss the night further. No sustained official investigation produced a conventional solution. The case entered ufological literature as a classic close-encounter-of-the-third-kind report and has remained there, periodically revived but never resolved.

11. Current Archive Status

Status: Active archival. Core multi-witness entity case.

Confidence: High that multiple adults observed and reacted to the same anomalous figures over several hours. Moderate confidence on exact morphology and the nature of their movement or apparent resistance to gunfire. Low confidence on origin or intent.

Filing note

A rural Kentucky family spent hours shooting at small glowing figures that kept coming back to the windows and the roof, then drove into town in genuine terror to ask for help. Police found the fear, the shell casings, and nothing else. That combination is why the case is still open.
