1. Public Record

Mokele-mbembe, "one who stops the flow of rivers," Likouala and Lake Tele talk. A long-necked water animal, sometimes with a tail that can capsize, feared and also used as a reason not to go on the water. Colonial officers write the name down. Later expeditions, including Roy Mackal's in the 1980s, come back with interviews, a few distant shapes, no carcass. Congolese voices are not a single choir. Some know the word as a story. Some know it as a thing to leave alone.

No hide. No bone that a lab will hang this name on. Documentaries replace crates. Lake Tele photographs as a lake. The sauropod silhouette is a western convenience and should be labelled as such when it appears in a drawing that left Chicago before it left Impfondo.

A river that stops. A neck. No landing.

One who stops the flow of rivers.

The name as collected

2. Date of Incident

Talk recorded from the early twentieth century through late-century expeditions. Mackal 1980 and 1981 among the better-known trips.

3. Location

Lake Tele / Likouala aux Herbes. Approximate 01°20 N 017°10 E.

4. Official Narrative

No fauna list. Official narrative is expedition folklore and uncollected testimony.

5. Witness Layer

River people as interviewed. Mackal and later teams. Sceptics who stayed home.

6. Recovery Logistics

Photographs that do not close it. No bone.

7. Assessment

A river file. Keep the name's meaning. Keep the absence of a choir. Do not write a sauropod. Do not write the books as specimens. An expedition that ate well and came home light is still data. It is data about absence.

8. Materials & Remains

Interview books. Lake. No type.

9. Key Personnel

Likouala river speakers : The name.

Roy Mackal : The late-century collector.

10. Aftermath

Documentaries instead of a crate. The lake is still a lake.

11. Current Archive Status

Status: Lake Tele talk. Long neck. Expeditions empty. No bone.

Confidence: High that the name and a large water-animal claim are established in the region. Low that a living dinosaur is shown. Low that any distant shape is diagnostic.

Filing note

A river people with a word for a thing that stops water, expeditions that ate well and came home light, books with drawings, a lake that photographs as a lake.
