1. Public Record

Fulk Lake, seven acres near Churubusco, Indiana. 1898, farmer Oscar Fulk says a giant turtle lives in his water and then lets it drop. July 1948, Ora Blue and Charley Wilson see something they put at five hundred pounds while fishing the same pond, now on Gale Harris's land. Harris sees it too. Head like a softball. Shell talk that grows with the crowd.

Early 1949 a Fort Wayne UPI man puts Oscar on the wire. Oscar after Fulk, not after a Latin. Sightseers wreck the farm lanes. State police run traffic. Harris pumps the lake toward a dammed field with Orville Bright and Kenneth Leitch. The dam goes when the pond is almost empty. A deep-sea diver is booked. The wrong kit arrives in March. Nets, traps, spectators. No turtle comes up that a scale would take.

Churubusco keeps Turtle Days. The pond keeps its mud. Oscar keeps the name of a man who walked away in 1898.

2. Date of Incident

Fulk 1898. Blue and Wilson July 1948. National hunt early 1949.

3. Location

Churubusco, Indiana. Approximate 41°14 N 085°19 W.

4. Official Narrative

A farm pond and a media month. Official narrative is that no animal of that size was landed. Wildlife desks did not add a species.

5. Witness Layer

Oscar Fulk. Ora Blue. Charley Wilson. Gale Harris. The UPI desk. The crowd that needed traffic control.

The wrong equipment was delivered to the Harris farm.

March 1949 diver

6. Recovery Logistics

Pumps, a failed dam, a diver who could not dive. No shell on a cart.

7. Assessment

A pond-and-crowd file. Keep 1898 so 1949 is a second look, not a birth. Keep the broken dam. A snapping turtle can be large. Five hundred pounds on a seven-acre farm pond is a different claim. Do not write Turtle Days as evidence. Do not write Harris as a liar because the dam failed.

8. Materials & Remains

Wire copy. Local festival. No specimen.

9. Key Personnel

Oscar Fulk : 1898 and the name.

Gale Harris : The hunt.

Ora Blue / Charley Wilson : 1948.

10. Aftermath

The town leans into the joke and the history at once. The pond is still a pond. Oscar was never on a hook.

11. Current Archive Status

Status: Fulk 1898. Hunt 1949. Dam broke. No landing.

Confidence: High that a 1949 media hunt drained a farm pond and took no turtle. High that Fulk spoke in 1898. Low that a 500-pound snapper lived there. Low that the diver would have settled it with the right kit.

Filing note

A farmer who mentioned a turtle and stopped talking, fifty years, two men fishing, a UPI wire, a dam that gave out with the pond almost gone, a diver sent the wrong gear, a town that still throws a party under the animal's name.

The wrong equipment was delivered. Not a punchline written later. The line in the 1949 paper when the last serious try died on a loading dock.
