1. Public Record

6 June 1980, Tingley, West Yorkshire. Zigmund Adamski, fifty-six, a miner, left the house on an errand and did not come back. Five days later, 11 June, Trevor Parker found a body face down about ten feet up a pile of anthracite at Tomlin’s yard beside Todmorden station. Parker had been at the yard that morning. The body had not been there at 08:15.

Adamski was in a jacket. Shirt missing. Wallet and watch missing in some accounts. Hair cropped roughly. One day’s beard after five days gone. Oval burns on the neck and below the ear, a tacky ointment nobody at the lab could name. Coroner James Turnbull: heart attack, burns not the cause of death. PC Alan Godfrey was one of the first officers on the coal. Five months later Godfrey would have his own night on a Todmorden road. Different file. Same town.

I am open-minded. I can’t rule it out.

2. Date of Incident

Last seen 6 June 1980. Found 11 June, 15:45. Inquest the same year. Godfrey’s own encounter is 28 November 1980 and should not be folded into this page.

3. Location

Tomlin’s coal yard, Todmorden, beside the railway. Approximate 53°43 N 002°06 W. Home was Tingley, about twenty miles east. Rain that day. Greasy coal.

4. Official Narrative

Inquest: natural causes, cardiac. Burns unexplained as to agent. No finding of homicide that stuck. Official narrative is a dead miner on a coal heap and a town that could not say how he climbed it.

5. Witness Layer

Trevor Parker: not there at 08:15, there at 15:45. Officers who said the body looked placed, not crawled. Family who had been preparing a god-daughter’s wedding. Pathologist who could not name the ointment. Godfrey as first responder, not as ufologist. That order matters.

It wasn’t acid on his neck. He was certainly alive on the day he was found. It’s a real mystery, although one thing I do know, it was nothing to do with any aliens.

Later police comment on the pathologist’s view

He looked as if he had been put there.

6. Recovery Logistics

The body. The ointment that would not name itself. No climb marks that satisfied Parker. No vehicle logged on the single-track yard road that accounted for a delivery of a man.

7. Assessment

A death file that ufology borrowed because of the town and the officer. Keep the inquest. Heart, not spacecraft. The unexplained remainder is real enough without the November road: a sick man on greasy coal, no shirt, an ointment with no label, a heap that had been empty at breakfast. Do not make Godfrey’s later night do work this page cannot do.

8. Materials & Remains

Inquest paper. Yard statements. No named chemical for the neck.

9. Key Personnel

Zigmund Adamski : Miner. Found on the coal.

Trevor Parker : Yard. Empty at breakfast.

PC Alan Godfrey / PC Mervyn Haig : First officers.

James Turnbull : Coroner.

10. Aftermath

Todmorden became a sentence in British UFO books mostly because of Godfrey in November. Adamski is the June body that those books use as a prologue. He deserves his own page.

11. Current Archive Status

Status: Unexplained placement death, Todmorden coal yard, 11 June 1980. Inquest: cardiac. Agent of the burns unnamed.

Confidence: High that Adamski was found on the heap on 11 June and had not been there that morning. High that the inquest called the death cardiac. Low that the ointment or the climb has been explained. Low that this page should carry Godfrey’s November night as proof of anything.

Filing note

A miner missing five days, a heap empty at breakfast, a body face down in the rain, burns with an ointment no lab would name. The inquest said heart. The heap still has to be climbed.

He was due at a god-daughter’s wedding. Not a night watch. A family event on the calendar. That small ordinary date makes the missing shirt colder than any later story about the same town in November.
