1. Public Record

Toynbee tiles. Linoleum-and-asphalt messages pressed into city streets, first widely noticed in the 1980s, concentrated in Philadelphia and the American northeast with outliers as far as South America. The main plate reads TOYNBEE IDEA IN MOVIE 2001 RESURRECT DEAD ON PLANET JUPITER, with small variations and side plates about media, enemies, and sometimes a house address. Arnold Toynbee's talk of resurrection, Kubrick's film, and a literal Jupiter sit in one sentence that will not unpack politely.

A 2011 documentary, Resurrect Dead, follows Justin Duerr and names a Philadelphia man, Severino "Sevy" Verna, as a candidate, along with a modified car that may have been used to press plates into warm asphalt. Verna does not hold a press conference. New tiles appear after the film in some cities and stop appearing in others. Roads departments scrape them as graffiti. Collectors lift others. The work is vandalism to a crew and scripture to a few walkers.

A street text. No office. No signed artist in the usual sense.

The main plate

2. Date of Incident

From the early 1980s through later decades, unevenly. Documentary 2011.

3. Location

Philadelphia first, then other cities. Approximate 39°57 N 075°10 W.

4. Official Narrative

Street departments scrape them. Official narrative is graffiti in a hard medium. No court names an artist as the sole setter.

5. Witness Layer

Drivers who look down. Duerr and the documentary team. The Philadelphia candidate. Copyists.

6. Recovery Logistics

Tiles lifted by cities and by collectors. No manifesto on letterhead. A car in a documentary, not in a dock.

7. Assessment

A pavement file. Keep the full sentence. Keep Verna as a candidate, not a conviction. Do not write Kubrick as a co-author. Do not write Jupiter as a program. Side plates about journalists are part of the work and part of why the man, if it is one man, stayed inside the house.

8. Materials & Remains

Tiles in situ and in boxes. The documentary. Photographs of worn plates.

9. Key Personnel

Unknown setter : The plates.

Severino Verna : Named candidate, not confirmed here.

Justin Duerr : The long walker.

10. Aftermath

The sentence outlives the asphalt it was pressed into. Copyists dilute it. Roads crews keep scraping.

11. Current Archive Status

Status: From 1980s. Street plates. Candidate named. No briefing.

Confidence: High that the plates exist and share a sentence. Low that the named man is proved the only setter. Low that the sentence is a project with a second official page.

Filing note

A kneeler in a street, linoleum, a sentence that names Toynbee and a film and a planet, cities that scrape, a documentary that points at a house, a house that does not open a briefing.

He does not hold a press conference. The most complete biography we have.
