1. Public Record

7 January 1948, afternoon. Godman Army Airfield at Fort Knox took highway-patrol calls about an object over Kentucky. Four Kentucky Air National Guard F-51D Mustangs of C Flight were already in the air. Captain Thomas Mantell, twenty-five, was told to close and identify.

He climbed. His wingmen, without oxygen kit, would not follow through 15,000 feet. Mantell kept going. Tower notes give him saying the object was metallic and tremendous, half his speed, then that he would try 20,000 and abandon if no closer. That is the last useful sentence. The Mustang came down near Franklin. He was dead in the wreck. Blue Book later wrote Skyhook balloon. In 1948 that programme was not a word you said on an open frequency.

It appears metallic of tremendous size. I’m trying to close in for better look.

2. Date of Incident

7 January 1948, chase about 14:45 to 15:15. Crash near Franklin shortly after. Blue Book incident 33.

3. Location

Godman Field, Fort Knox, then south toward Franklin, Kentucky. Crash about 36°40 N 086°35 W. Object first called in from the Maysville line.

4. Official Narrative

USAF / Blue Book: Skyhook balloon, hypoxia, loss of control above 20,000 feet without oxygen. Official narrative is a secret balloon and a pilot who outclimbed his kit. Ruppelt said tower memory of the exact words was already soft by the time historians wrote “metallic and tremendous” as gospel.

5. Witness Layer

Tower officers. Wingmen who saw something and then saw Mantell keep climbing. Highway patrol and later civilian calls across the state. The balloon reading needs a Skyhook in the right piece of sky. Clinton County is the usual launch candidate. It is not a signed flight plan on this page.

I’m going up to twenty thousand feet. If I’m no closer, I’ll abandon chase.

Mantell, last reported intention

Object traveling at 180 MPH, half my speed.

Tower log of NG 869

6. Recovery Logistics

P-51 wreckage scattered south of Franklin. Mantell’s body. No balloon envelope in the crash field. No gun-camera still that the archive can print.

7. Assessment

The first American military death tied in public to a saucer chase. That is why the file is loud. Hypoxia in a Mustang without an oxygen mask is not a strained reading. A classified balloon he would not have been briefed on is also not strained. What the file does not have is the object on the ground. Keep the last intention. He said he would quit at 20,000. He did not.

8. Materials & Remains

Crash report. Tower transcripts that do not all agree. Blue Book 33. No recovered target.

9. Key Personnel

Capt. Thomas F. Mantell : Flight lead. Dead in the wreck.

Godman Tower : Col. Hix, T/Sgt Blackwell, others.

Wingmen : Broke off for oxygen.

Edward Ruppelt : Later Blue Book reading.

10. Aftermath

Saucer books made him a martyr. The USAF made him a balloon. Kentucky still has the crash site. The Skyhook files sat in a different drawer in 1948.

11. Current Archive Status

Status: Fatal intercept, 7 January 1948. Official finding: Skyhook and hypoxia. Target never recovered.

Confidence: High that Mantell died in a P-51 after a climb without oxygen and that a large object was being talked on the Godman net. Moderate that the object was a classified balloon. Low that a craft was found in the wreck field.

Filing note

A twenty-five-year-old Guardsman told to close, wingmen who would not follow the oxygen line, a last sentence about twenty thousand feet, a Mustang in pieces. Blue Book wrote balloon. In 1948 that balloon was not a word you put on an open radio.

He said he would abandon the chase if he was no closer. A limit he set for himself. He went past it. That small unkept bargain makes the wreck colder than any later argument about ice-cream cones and cables.
