1. Public Record

Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota, November 1977. Mario Woods is a security policeman on a response team with the 44th Missile Security Squadron. The wing holds 150 Minuteman missiles across three squadron areas. Each launch control facility owns ten silos. Woods is out at the November flight. His usual partner is off. The man in the truck with him is Michael Johnson, vacation relief, first night they have worked together.

Early in the evening Woods steps outside the launch control facility for a cigarette and sees a light at about thirty degrees, large, a colour and intensity he does not know from the B-52s the base also flies. He thinks, for a moment, two bombers. The light moves and goes out. Hours later the radio gives a SIT 4 at November 5: outer zone penetrated, a live silo. They roll toward it on Highway 79. The prairie ahead is lit as if a sun were coming up in the wrong place. Over the blast door, five to ten feet off the ground, sits an object Woods later calls the size of a Walmart. No cockpit. No writing. A discharge on the skin. Silent.

A smaller body, golf-cart scale in his later telling, leaves the large one. Figures come toward the truck. Johnson is frozen on the wheel. Woods puts a Maglite out the window and pulls himself onto the sill. Then the night stops. They come back several hours later, five to eight miles off the site, truck in the mud on the backside of Newell reservoir, no tyre track that explains the move. Woods gets on the radio and says he is beside a white wall. Wing Security Control triangulates. A backup team finds them. AFOSI takes them apart. They are separated. Woods spends decades asking where Mike is. In 2026 Jesse Michels puts them in the same room again after Joe Rogan has already put the outline on a large show.

A first night with a new partner. A silo alarm. A gap measured in hours and miles.

It was a sit 4, which was a serious alarm. It means that exterior alarm is penetrated.

2. Date of Incident

November 1977, night. Woods has given mid-November in some tellings. First public clusters via Robert Hastings and later podcasts from about 2020. Reunion coverage 2026.

3. Location

November flight, Ellsworth AFB missile field, South Dakota, toward Newell. Approximate 44°43 N 103°25 W for the Newell end. Main base 44°09 N 103°06 W.

4. Official Narrative

No released incident report that this archive treats as matching Woods's night. AFOSI questioning is part of his account, not a public file. A separate two-page paper dated 16 November 1977, Site L-9 / Lima 9 near Nisland, COVERED WAGON, airmen Jenkins and Raeke, radiation 1.7 to 2.9 roentgens, has circulated for decades and was called a fabrication by reporter Bob Pratt. That paper is not this night. Do not weld them.

5. Witness Layer

Mario Woods, 44th Missile Security Squadron, first-person across History Channel, Hastings, Michels, Sprague, Lehto, AARO interview by his account. Michael Johnson, silent for decades, present in the 2026 reunion. Backup team that found the truck. AFOSI. No third man on the prairie who has signed the same hour.

My partner, Michael Johnson, he was just frozen to the wheel, looking straight ahead out that windshield.

Woods, on the last minute he remembers at the silo

We went from November 5 to Newell Lake. There were no tire prints. It was just our vehicle in the middle of the mud.

Woods, on where the night resumed

6. Recovery Logistics

Truck in reservoir mud. Radio triangulation. OSI interview. No object recovered from November 5. No public missile log that this folder can cite as confirming a SIT 4 that night.

7. Assessment

Woods has told this night for years without dropping the unglamorous parts: vacation relief, a SIT 4, Highway 79, a partner frozen on the wheel, mud at Newell instead of the fence they had been sent to. Those are not the details a man invents to sound grand. Johnson sitting down in 2026 does not invent the prairie either. It only means the second seat was always occupied.

The L-9 sheet is a different night on a different site with different names, and Pratt already said it was paper. Leave it in its own drawer. What remains here is simple enough. Two airmen were sent to a live hole. Something was already over the door. Hours later they were miles away and could not say how the truck had moved. This archive reads that as the event, not as a rumour waiting for a stamp.

8. Materials & Remains

Woods interviews. 2026 reunion tape. Hastings pages. The L-9 document as a neighbouring counterfeit, filed apart. No silo hardware in public hands.

9. Key Personnel

Mario Woods : Response team, 44th MSS. The voice that would not drop Johnson's name.

Michael Johnson : Vacation relief, first night, the wheel.

AFOSI : The room after the mud.

Jesse Michels : The 2026 table.

10. Aftermath

Woods leaves the service in 1983 after eight years. He spends the podcast era asking a missing partner to stand up. Johnson does, late. Ellsworth still sits on the northern tier. The November flight is still a number on a map. The L-9 paper still circulates among people who have not read Pratt.

11. Current Archive Status

Status: Nov 1977. November 5. Missing hours. Reunion 2026.

Confidence: High that Woods has told a consistent November-flight story across years and that a man using Johnson's name has now sat with him. Low that a public USAF log confirms the SIT 4. Low that the L-9 document describes this night. Low that size and beings are typed.

Filing note

This folder takes Mario Woods at his word. November 1977, the November flight, Michael Johnson on vacation relief, the SIT 4 at November 5, the object over the blast door, the figures, the hours that vanished, the truck in the mud at Newell. It happened. It happened as he has told it.

A first night with a stranger covering someone else's leave, and the prairie still opened anyway. We do not need a released log to know what those two men sat under.
