1. Public Record

Monday 26 November 1979, just after 04:00. Franck Fontaine, eighteen, Jean-Pierre Prévost, twenty-five, and Salomon N’Diaye, twenty-five, were loading jeans into a borrowed 1965 Ford Taunus break at the Justice Mauve estate in Cergy-Pontoise. The car had no starter. Fontaine sat at the wheel with the engine running so it would not stall. A beam of light came down toward the cabbage fields. Fontaine drove toward it. The other two went upstairs for a camera and an umbrella.

From a window Prévost saw the front of the car swallowed in a luminous halo four metres across, with three or four smaller spheres moving around it. The light collapsed into a tube and went up. They reached the car two hundred metres down the road. Headlights on. Ignition on. A high gear engaged. Left door open. Fontaine gone.

N’Diaye rang Police-secours at about 04:30 and said their friend had been taken by something mysterious, that it must be a UFO. Thirty men later walked two hectares. Fontaine walked back to the same block at 04:20 on Monday 3 December, unshaven, in the same clothes, with the same hundred-franc note he had left with. He asked why they were not already on the road to Gisors market.

Notre ami a été enlevé par un truc mystérieux. Ce doit être un ovni.

Salomon N’Diaye, call to Police-secours, 26 November 1979

2. Date of Incident

Disappearance: 26 November 1979, approximately 04:00-04:30. Return: 3 December 1979, approximately 04:20. Eight days by the calendar. Fontaine said the interval felt like half an hour.

3. Location

Quartier de la Justice Mauve, Cergy-Pontoise, Val-d’Oise, north-west of Paris. Approximate coordinates 49°02 N 002°04 E. New-town concrete, cabbage fields, a borrowed red Ford that would not start on its own.

4. Official Narrative

Police and gendarmerie both attended. The car was examined. A dog went into the vehicle and would not come out cleanly, circling the seat where Fontaine had been. No radioactivity. No blood. Missing-person notices ran nationally. When Fontaine returned he was interviewed the same morning. He said he remembered voices and almost nothing else. There is no closed judicial finding that an object took him. There is also no closed finding that he spent the week in a friend’s flat, which is the later rival story.

5. Witness Layer

The two men who loaded the jeans are the spine. Officers on the night described N’Diaye as terrified and jumping; Prévost as angry because he already knew he would be called mad. Fontaine’s first hours back were usefully dull. He wanted the car. He thought it had been stolen. He did not arrive with a prepared abduction script.

Under later hypnosis both Fontaine and Prévost produced interior sequences - spheres of light, a laboratory, a large-headed figure. That layer arrived after the believers arrived. Keep it off the first night.

Those eight days passed like half an hour. I feel like I’ve been asleep.

Franck Fontaine, first gendarmerie interview, 3 December 1979

He seemed angry, telling us that he knew we were going to think he was crazy.

Police note on Jean-Pierre Prévost, morning of 26 November

6. Recovery Logistics

The Ford was left in the road and later recovered. No craft. No soil anomaly that entered a lab note. Search teams covered ground, not sky. The physical file is a car with the lights on and a man who came back wearing the same clothes.

7. Assessment

France’s loudest abduction of the period because it produced an immediate police call, a missing-person week, and a return to the same doorstep. That sequence is rare. What is not rare is the later contamination: hypnosis, contactee groups, and Prévost’s subsequent claim that he had staged the whole week and parked Fontaine in a Pontoise apartment.

The confession, if that is what it was, sits years after the gendarmerie paper. It does not erase the night call. It also does not prove itself. File both.

8. Materials & Remains

The Ford Taunus. Contemporary police and gendarmerie notes. Press photographs of the cabbage field. No authenticated object from inside any craft. The hundred-franc note is a biographical detail, not evidence of a beam.

9. Key Personnel

Franck Fontaine - Driver. Missing eight days. Returned asking about the market.

Jean-Pierre Prévost - Loader, window witness, later organiser and later recanter.

Salomon N’Diaye - Made the 04:30 call. The sentence that put the case on the wire.

Gendarmerie de Cergy / Police de Pontoise - First official paper.

10. Aftermath

The case became a national circus and then a sour argument about who had used whom. Fontaine largely wanted to be left alone. Prévost stayed in the story. Cergy is now cited both as a classic European abduction and as a cautionary hoax, which means the folder has to carry both labels or it is lying.

J’affirme que l’affaire de Cergy-Pontoise est bidon du début à la fin.

Jean-Pierre Prévost, later public recantation

11. Current Archive Status

Status: Police-called disappearance with a seven-day gap and a contested recantation.

Confidence: High that Fontaine was missing for a week and that two friends called the police at 04:30 describing a light and an empty car. Moderate that their first-night statements were sincere. Low-to-moderate on any craft. Low that the later hypnosis or the later confession can be treated as clean.

Filing note

Three men loading jeans into a Ford that will not start, a light over the cabbage fields, a 04:30 call to the police, eight days in which Fontaine is gone. The laboratory spheres came later. The call is timed. The laboratory is not.

They were going to sell jeans at Gisors market. Not a night watch, not a skywatch club. A working car and a bundle of denim. When Fontaine walked back to the same block he asked about the market. That small errand makes the empty Ford colder than any later recantation.
