1. Public Record

Monte Cristo Homestead looks down on Junee, New South Wales. Christopher William Crawley builds it in 1884-85 as a Late Victorian statement of money made in the district. He dies in the house on 14 December 1910, heart failure after a carbuncle on the neck turns, the collar blamed in the family telling. His widow, Elizabeth, is said to have left the place only twice in the next twenty-three years, turning an upstairs box room into a chapel. The Crawleys stay until 1948. Then caretakers. Then empty rooms and decay.

Reg and Olive Ryan buy in 1963, stop the rot, and in time sell the house as Australia's most haunted. Staff stories of hard masters become a list of deaths and a staircase a visitor is asked to feel. Television comes: A Big Country in 1977, Getaway in 1992, Scream Test, Ghost Hunters International, My Ghost Story. After Olive Ryan dies the family ends the public operation. The doors close to ordinary tickets after January 2025.

A hill house. A collar. A sign that said most haunted until the sign came down.

Australia's most haunted house.

On the sentence the Ryans put over the gate

2. Date of Incident

Built 1884-85. Crawley death 1910. Family out 1948. Ryan purchase 1963. Tourism from the later Ryan years to January 2025.

3. Location

Junee, New South Wales. Approximate 34°52 S 147°35 E.

4. Official Narrative

A private Victorian house, later a museum and ticketed attraction, now closed to that trade. Official narrative is local history. It does not certify the haunt list.

5. Witness Layer

Crawley household and staff as later remembered. The Ryans. Television crews. Paying night visitors while the gate was open.

She left the house on two occasions in the remaining twenty-three years.

On Elizabeth Crawley after 1910

No longer open to the public after January 2025.

On the end of the ticket

6. Recovery Logistics

The house itself. No inquest that turned a staff story into a conviction. Souvenir trade now finished.

7. Assessment

Keep 1884, the carbuncle, and the widow's chapel so the hill has a family before it has a brand. "Most haunted" is a marketing line, not a finding. Do not write every later death on the stairs as proved. Do not write the 2025 close as proof the house went quiet. It went private. Those are different sentences.

8. Materials & Remains

The homestead. Ryan restoration. Television tape. Closed gate.

9. Key Personnel

Christopher and Elizabeth Crawley : Builders and long occupants.

Reg and Olive Ryan : The restoration and the sign.

10. Aftermath

Junee still has the silhouette on the hill. The souvenir shop does not. The list of figures belongs to the years the door was open.

11. Current Archive Status

Status: Junee 1885. Ryan ticket years. Closed 2025.

Confidence: High that Crawley built it and died there and that the Ryans ran a haunt business from the restored rooms. Low that the marketed death list is a coroner's list.

Filing note

A Victorian house on a New South Wales hill, a starched collar and a carbuncle, a widow who made a chapel of a box room, a couple who bought a ruin and hung a boast over the gate, a January when the boast came down.
