1. Public Record

112 Ocean Avenue, Amityville, Long Island. Dutch colonial, quarter-round windows, sign that said High Hopes. Before dawn on 13 November 1974 Ronald DeFeo Jr kills six of his family in their beds. The insanity defence that blamed the house fails. Six life terms. The house sits empty about a year.

December 1975, George and Kathy Lutz, three children, a dog, eighty thousand dollars against a higher assessment, pool and boathouse on the creek. They last twenty-eight days. Their later account: slime, a pig with red eyes, a voice that said get out, a priest who would not stay, cold, levitating beds. Jay Anson writes The Amityville Horror. The film follows. William Weber, DeFeo's lawyer, later says he and the Lutzes sat with a bottle and built a story. The Lutzes sue and are sued. Courts treat much of the haunting as not proven. The murders stay proven.

The address changes its number in later years to shake the traffic. The windows still look like eyes. The twenty-eight days are a book. The November night is a coroner.

Get out.

The sentence the Lutz account made famous

2. Date of Incident

DeFeo 13 November 1974. Lutz occupancy December 1975 into January 1976. Anson 1977.

3. Location

Amityville, New York. Approximate 40°39 N 073°25 W.

4. Official Narrative

Six murders, a conviction. Official narrative on the haunting is disputed civil paper and a franchise. Police did not log a pig.

5. Witness Layer

DeFeo. The Lutz family. Weber. Anson. Later owners who wanted the number changed.

6. Recovery Logistics

Crime-scene photographs from November 1974. A book. No slime in a vial a lab kept.

7. Assessment

A murder-house file that grew a second storey. Keep 13 November in the first block so the book cannot eat the dead. Keep twenty-eight days as the Lutz claim, not as a measured haunting. Weber's bottle is a problem for the franchise and not a pardon for DeFeo. Do not write the windows as a face and call it evidence. Do not write the whole street as cleared because a lawyer talked.

8. Materials & Remains

Trial record. Anson. Civil filings. The standing house under another number.

9. Key Personnel

Ronald DeFeo Jr : November.

George and Kathy Lutz : Twenty-eight days.

William Weber : The later bottle.

Jay Anson : The book.

10. Aftermath

A film series that outlived every principal's version. Tourists still slow at the corner. The murders remain the only part that never needed a publisher.

11. Current Archive Status

Status: DeFeo 1974. Lutz 28 days. Book 1977. Haunting contested.

Confidence: High that six people were killed in that house in November 1974. High that the Lutzes left after a month and sold a story. Low that the phenomena Anson listed occurred as written. Low that Weber's bottle is a full account of how the book was born.

Filing note

Six beds in November, an empty year, a cheap colonial with a hopeful sign, twenty-eight days, a lawyer, a bottle, a book that made the windows famous, a number on the kerb that later had to change.

The murders stay proven. The twenty-eight days are paper. Hold both, and do not let the second one speak for the first.
