MAPINGUARI
Amazon accounts. Oren's interviews. Hunters who threw the hair away because it stank. No body.

1. Public Record
Amazonas, Acre, Pará, and neighbouring forest. Mapinguari, mapinguary. Long hair, red to black, claws like an anteater scaled toward armadillo, a stink from the belly, quadruped that can stand. Folklore layer adds a mouth from face to stomach and a navel that takes the only bullet. David Oren, from the 1970s into the 1990s in the Tapajós, collects more than ninety accounts and interviews seven hunters who say they fired and, in some tellings, kept hair and claw until the smell made them throw the pieces away.
A seringueiro in a 1928 quote comes back to a hut and finds his mate being eaten, claws like a jaguar, a mouth like a lapel. Candace Slater and others split spirit-curupira talk from the animal talk. Oren first floats a small mylodontid, then a megalonychid after four canine-like teeth keep returning in testimony. Ground sloths left the living record thousands of years ago. Journalists like the rhyme. The forest has not given him a body.
Stench compared to feces and rotten flesh is the detail hunters repeat. That is not a sloth paper. It is a working smell.
Extremely foul odour from its belly.
2. Date of Incident
Folk accounts into the twentieth century. 1928 seringueiro quote. Oren interviews 1970s-90s.
3. Location
Western and central Amazon basin. Approximate 04°15 S 069°55 W.
4. Official Narrative
Known megafauna extinct. Official narrative is folklore plus mis-seen sloth or bear-like stock. No type.
5. Witness Layer
Tappers and hunters. Oren. Mesquita. Seven men who said they shot.
A mouth as large as a lapel, reaching from the face to the stomach.
6. Recovery Logistics
Testimony. Discarded hair and claw in stories. No museum piece with a chain.
7. Assessment
A tapper-and-stench file. Keep the 1928 hut. Keep Oren's ninety and his seven. Keep the navel-and-mouth layer in folklore and out of the anatomy unless a body arrives. A ground sloth is a beautiful guess and still a guess. Do not write the Amazon as empty of large hidden mammals just because a camera grid is thin. Do not write a living sloth because the name is good.
8. Materials & Remains
Oren's notes as published. No claw in a drawer that has been sequenced in public.
9. Key Personnel
David Oren : The interview years.
The 1928 tapper : The hut.
Seven hunters : The shots they claimed.
10. Aftermath
Mapinguari stays on expedition lists. No funded close has produced a hide. The smell remains the part that does not need a sloth to be ugly.
11. Current Archive Status
Status: Amazon accounts. Oren interviews. No body. Stench repeated.
Confidence: High that forest workers describe a large foul biped-capable animal. High that Oren logged a large interview set. Low that a living ground sloth is shown. Low that the mouth-to-stomach figure is anatomy.
Filing note
A Sunday hut, a tapper coming back from the trees, ninety later interviews, seven men who said they fired, hair thrown away because it stank, a scientist who wanted a sloth and never got to weigh one.
They discarded them due to the stench. Not a camp flourish. The reason the only physical pieces in the stories are gone.
