1. Public Record
The experiment, as told, sits on 28 October 1943 at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. USS Eldridge, a Cannon-class destroyer escort, DE-173, is said to have been wrapped in force fields drawn from a reading of Einstein, gone green, gone from radar, gone from sight, and for minutes been seen at Norfolk before coming back. Crew, in the telling, went mad, went into the deck, burned. The teller is Carl Meredith Allen, merchant mariner, also Carlos Miguel Allende, who said he watched from SS Andrew Furuseth.
The paper trail starts in 1955. Allen posted Morris K. Jessup a marked copy of The Case for the UFO, then letters. The Office of Naval Research received the annotated book in a Happy Easter parcel. ONR printed about a hundred copies, the Varo edition, annotations and all. Jessup saw Allen's hand in the notes. The Navy's later public line is that Eldridge's deck logs put her at New York and the Bahamas that autumn, not in a disappearing act at Philadelphia, and that degaussing, a real wartime trick against mines, is the ordinary machine people heard wrong. Allen also said Einstein had tutored him for weeks. Jessup died in 1959. Allen died in 1994. The film arrived in 1984 and did the rest.
The ship became invisible.
