1. Public Record
Guatemala, 1954. Jacobo Árbenz has expropriated unused United Fruit land and offered compensation in bonds at tax value. Washington reads communism. Allen Dulles at CIA, John Foster Dulles at State, a company with a long invoice. Caption PBSUCCESS. Castillo Armas is the exile picked to wear a liberation. Radio propaganda, a small armed column, aircraft, a psychological operation designed to make the army step aside. Árbenz resigns in June. The colonel goes to Guatemala City. The land policy is reversed. A long after of security services and graves.
The Agency later writes its own history and the history leaks. Church and others put the caption in the same decade as Ajax. United Fruit's fingerprints are not a theory. They are in the cables. Árbenz dies in exile. Castillo Armas is shot in 1957. The country does not get a quiet century.
This page is the 1954 operation, not a later civil war manual.
2. Date of Incident
Planning 1953-54. Árbenz out June 1954. CIA internal history later. Public in the 1970s leaks and after.
3. Location
Guatemala City and the exile bases. Approximate 14°38 N 090°31 W.
4. Official Narrative
A CIA covert action later acknowledged in Agency histories. Official US narrative moved from denial toward a sanitized success. Guatemalan narrative is a coup.
5. Witness Layer
Árbenz. Castillo Armas. The Dulles brothers. United Fruit counsel. The officers who wrote the later internal history.
6. Recovery Logistics
Declassified PBSUCCESS volumes. Cables. The leaked history. No single courtroom that tried the caption.
7. Assessment
A company-and-station file. Keep the tax-value offer so the land is not rewritten as a gift. Keep radio before rifles. Ajax is the sibling. Do not write 1954 as a popular rising. Do not write every later Guatemalan horror as a line item on this page. The operation ended a government. What grew after has its own numbers.
8. Materials & Remains
CIA history. FRUS volumes. United Fruit paper.
9. Key Personnel
Jacobo Árbenz : The president removed.
Castillo Armas : The replacement.
Allen Dulles : CIA.
John Foster Dulles : State.
10. Aftermath
A model other stations studied. A country that paid for decades. The caption now sits with Ajax as how a company and a directorate could share a year.
11. Current Archive Status
Status: PBSUCCESS 1954. Árbenz out. CIA history later public. Land reversed.
Confidence: High that CIA ran the operation and that United Fruit was in the paper. High that Árbenz left in June 1954. Low that every local killing after is a PBSUCCESS order. Low that the radio war's full scripts are in public.
Filing note
Unused land, bonds at tax value, two brothers in two buildings, a fruit company, a radio that told an army it had already lost, a colonel on the road to the capital, a history the Agency wrote for itself and then could not keep.
At tax value. The offer. The part that makes the later speeches about gifts look like what they were.
