1. Public Record

21 October 1978, evening. Frederick Valentich, twenty, took a rented Cessna 182L, VH-DSJ, out of Moorabbin for King Island. He was going for crayfish. He crossed Cape Otway on time. Six minutes later he asked Melbourne Flight Service if there was known traffic below five thousand. There was not.

What followed is six minutes on a tape. A large thing with four bright lights. Orbiting. A long shape, metallic, a green light. Engine rough. Then: it is hovering and it is not an aircraft. Seventeen seconds of pulsed metallic sound. Then nothing. Sea and air search. No wreck. No body. The Bass Strait kept the rest.

Melbourne, this is Delta Sierra Juliet. Is there any known traffic below five thousand?

Frederick Valentich, 19:06

2. Date of Incident

21 October 1978, last contact about 19:12 local. BASI opened a file. No finding that closed it.

3. Location

Over Bass Strait after Cape Otway, on the King Island track. Approximate 38°51 S 143°31 E. Moorabbin origin. King Island never reached.

4. Official Narrative

Bureau of Air Safety Investigation: aircraft missing, cause undetermined. No known traffic. The tape is the official object. Later talk of disorientation, a ditching, a staged disappearance, sits outside that finding.

5. Witness Layer

One pilot on the radio. Steve Robey on the ground. The tape does not give Robey a visual. It gives him a voice that starts asking about traffic and ends refusing the word aircraft. Other lights were reported over the Strait that night. They do not recover a Cessna.

Valentich had failed some exams and kept flying. He had an engagement ring on layaway. Those are human facts, not a motive that puts a wreck on the bottom by itself.

It seems to me that he’s playing some sort of game. He’s flying over me two, three times at a time at speeds I could not identify.

Frederick Valentich

It is hovering and it’s not an aircraft.

Frederick Valentich, last clear sentence

6. Recovery Logistics

RAAF Orion, ships, civilian aircraft. An engine cowl of uncertain link washed up years later and did not close the file. No cockpit. No bones.

7. Assessment

The cleanest missing-aircraft tape in the archive. The voice is calm longer than panic usually lasts. The metallic noise is on the recording. A ditching in the dark still fits. So does a thing that was not an aircraft. Neither has produced the Cessna. Do not promote the Bass Strait into a triangle on the back of one flight.

8. Materials & Remains

The ATC tape. The BASI paper. A rented 182 that is still listed missing.

9. Key Personnel

Frederick Valentich : Pilot. Twenty. Gone.

Steve Robey : Melbourne Flight Service. The other voice.

BASI : Cause undetermined.

10. Aftermath

His father kept asking. Documentaries keep the last sentence. King Island still sells crayfish. The tape has not improved with age.

No known traffic.

Melbourne Flight Service, first reply

11. Current Archive Status

Status: Missing Cessna, Bass Strait, 21 October 1978. Last words on tape. No wreck recovered.

Confidence: High that Valentich transmitted those sentences and that the aircraft was not found. High that Melbourne had no known traffic. Low that a identified aircraft will be written onto the tape. Low that the metallic noise has been cleanly explained.

Filing note

A twenty-year-old on a Saturday run for crayfish, a controller who had no traffic to give him, six minutes that end by refusing the word aircraft. The Strait did not give the Cessna back.

He had an engagement ring on layaway. Amid the orbiting lights and the pulsed noise sits a small ordinary plan for a later night. That human fact makes the open microphone colder.
